There has been a great demand to explore new gene-resources for resistance to numerous races of rice blast fungus prevalent in Japan. To meet this demand, a new variety Toride 1 with multi-racial blast resistance has successfully been bred by four successive backcrossings with an indica variety TKM, 1 as a donor and a japonica Norin 8 as a recurrent parent. This selection proved resistant to most of the majar pathogenic races of the rice blast fungus collected throughout the country.
